Willistown Township was part of the 50,000-acre (200-km2) Welsh Tract surveyed for William Penn in 1684. It was originally occupied by Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first mention of Willistown is on the Holmes Map of 1681, which calls it “Willeston.” Willistown was established as a township in 1704. A Native American reservation once stood here, and a monument commemorates it. Willistown Township’s first highways were Native American paths. Goshen, Sugartown, and Boot were established as cowpaths around 1710.
Those roads still exist and are known by the same names. Malvern, in this township, was the eastern terminus of the West Chester Railroad, which subsequently became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1870, the terminal was relocated to Frazer. The National Register of Historic Places lists Bartram’s Covered Bridge, Garrett Farmstead, Okehocking Historic District, Sugartown Historic District, and White Horse Historic District.
