The area’s first European settlement occurred around 1700 when Quakers purchased land from William Penn. The hamlet is home to two Friends Meetinghouses (previously Orthodox and Hicksite). The Orthodox meeting house was rebuilt in the early half of the nineteenth century, while the Hicksite meetinghouse was kept (built 1728, reconstructed, and expanded 1788). The two factions have now amalgamated and now convene in the meetinghouse’s original location. In 1973, a portion of the settlement was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
